Plan your Chengdu and Chongqing trip with ease. From itinerary ideas, transport options to accommodation recommendations, discover useful tips for your two-city getaway in Southwest China.

Itinerary

How many days are enough for a Chengdu and Chongqing trip?

A 5-day 4-night itinerary is ideal for exploring both cities at a comfortable pace. You can spend 2 nights in Chengdu and 2 nights in Chongqing to experience Chengdu's giant pandas, tea culture and laid-back lifestyle, followed by Chongqing's dramatic mountain cityscape, hotpot and night views.

Transport

Is it better to take a high-speed train or fly from Chengdu to Chongqing?

The high-speed train is the most convenient and efficient way to travel between Chengdu and Chongqing. Direct high-speed trains connect major stations in both cities, with travel time as fast as 1 hour. With frequent departures and city-centre to city-centre convenience, it is the best option for most travellers.

Chongqing

Where should I stay in Chongqing for a first visit?

For first-time visitors, Jiefangbei or Guanyin Bridge are convenient areas to stay. Jiefangbei is the city centre with easy access to Hongyadong, the Yangtze River cableway and numerous dining options. Guanyin Bridge offers a more local vibe with great shopping and food streets. Popular stays include Ascott Raffles City Chongqing, Asiam International Hotel in Hongyadong, and Chongqing Jiefangbei Hongya Cave Houju High-altitude River-view Hotel.

Best Time to Visit

What is the best time to visit Chengdu and Chongqing?

The best time to visit Chengdu and Chongqing is generally from March to May and September to November, when the weather is mild and comfortable for sightseeing. Spring offers blooming flowers and pleasant temperatures, while autumn brings cooler weather and clear skies. Summer can be hot and humid, especially in Chongqing, while winter is relatively mild but can be foggy.

Trip Planning

Should I visit Chengdu first or Chongqing first?

Both routes work well depending on your travel plans. Starting in Chengdu and ending in Chongqing is a popular choice, as you can enjoy Chengdu's relaxed panda-filled days first, then experience Chongqing's vibrant nightlife and iconic mountain city landscapes. Alternatively, you can start in Chongqing for its dramatic skyline and end in Chengdu for a more leisurely pace before departing.

Chengdu → Chongqing → Chengdu Day Trip! This is highly recommended for travelers who are short on time but want to explore two cities like we did. Focus only on the iconic landmarks in the city center because Chongqing is massive and famously hilly with lots of ups and downs. Trying to squeeze in every tourist spot will just exhaust you. High-speed trains run quite frequently, and the journey from Chengdu East → Chongqing North takes just about 1 to 2 hours, making it perfect for a dual-city getaway.
