Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden

Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden is a large park located in the city center, featuring Japanese and French garden landscapes.

Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden was originally a tranquil Japanese garden, and a French garden was later built. The park features lush forests, beautiful views, and 1,500 cherry trees, attracting a large number of visitors to enjoy the cherry blossoms in spring.

The birth of Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden can be traced back to Meiji 39 (1906), located on the former site of the residence of the Naito family, lords of Takato Domain in Shinshu during the Edo period. Originally built as an imperial garden, it became a national park after the war and is beloved by many. The park covers an area of 58.3 hectares, with a perimeter of 3.5 kilometers, and features unique garden views such as beautiful plane tree avenues.

Ueno Park

Ueno Park

Ueno Park is one of Tokyo's largest parks. With numerous facilities, you can stroll around at your leisure, enjoying the natural beauty and cultural atmosphere, or spend a whole day exploring its arts and culture. Every spring, the park transforms into a sea of cherry blossoms, attracting countless visitors.

Cherry Blossom Viewing Spot

This is a renowned cherry blossom viewing spot in Tokyo, boasting over a thousand cherry trees, among which the famous "Somei Yoshino" variety, discovered within Ueno Park, is particularly representative. Every year when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, Ueno Park becomes a popular cherry blossom viewing destination. The Cherry Blossom Avenue is a must-see for photos; the falling cherry blossoms are especially spectacular, echoing Lu Xun's famous line, "When the cherry blossoms of Ueno are in full bloom," referring to this very place. A "Cherry Blossom Festival" is held annually at this time, and at dusk, the park is illuminated with lights, reflecting on the cherry blossoms and creating a uniquely beautiful scene.

Shinobazu Pond

If you miss the "Cherry Blossom Festival," don't miss Shinobazu Pond in the southwest of the park. Every summer, the melodious music from the floating concert hall blends beautifully with the lotus flowers in the pond, where black swans, geese, mandarin ducks, and other aquatic creatures swim, creating a delightful scene. You can also visit the four-story aquarium by Shinobazu Pond to see nearly 600 species of aquatic animals.

Ueno Zoo

Located in the northwest of the park is Ueno Zoo, home to approximately 500 species of rare birds and animals. The zoo is divided into East and West sections. The East section is home to two giant pandas from China, "Li Li" and "Zhen Zhen," who are very popular. The West section also features a miniature zoo with small animals such as goats and ostriches. Next to the zoo is the Peony Garden, a memorial garden commemorating Sino-Japanese friendship in 1980. The "Lion's Head" peonies in the garden are particularly vibrant and worth seeing. Even in winter, you can see winter peonies blooming behind protective fencing, a rare sight found only here in Tokyo.

Historical Sites

Besides the breathtaking natural scenery, the park also boasts many historical sites worth visiting. Bronze statues are a prominent feature of Ueno Park. In addition, the park is home to historical sites such as Toshogu Shrine, Kan'ei-ji Temple, the Tokugawa Family Mausoleum, and Kiyomizu-do Hall, earning it the reputation of a "treasure trove of historical sites and cultural properties." You should definitely visit Toshogu Shrine, a masterpiece of classical Japanese architecture, where the 6-meter-high "demon lantern" is a marvel. The park also houses many important artifacts.

Museums and Art Galleries

The abundance of cultural and artistic venues is another major characteristic of Ueno Park. Hyokeikan, a representative building of late Meiji-era Western style, is itself very valuable. The National Museum of Western Art houses many masterpieces. The Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum exhibits masterpieces of traditional Japanese ukiyo-e and oil paintings. Furthermore, there are the National Museum of Nature and Science, the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan, the Ueno Royal Museum of Art, and the Shitamachi Folklore Museum, thus earning Ueno Park the reputation of a "cultural forest."
