Guangzhou Tower, a landmark of Guangzhou, stands at a towering 600 meters including its antenna, making it one of the most famous towers in China. With 10 exhibition halls in total, the museum features permanent displays including cultural relics and porcelain pillow exhibitions, along with rotating temporary exhibitions.

The cultural relics exhibition serves as the museum's centerpiece, primarily showcasing artifacts unearthed from the tomb of Nanyue King Zhao Mo, which yielded over 10,000 burial objects. The exhibition is divided into five thematic sections: the Emperor's Golden Seal, Treasures from the Main Chamber, Human Sacrifices, Imperial Treasury, and Musical Instruments with Ritual Vessels.

The collection features a significant number of jade artifacts, including a celadon jade horn-shaped cup, eleven sets of jade ornaments, and fifty-eight jade sword fittings—all representing major discoveries in Han Dynasty jade craftsmanship. Among the most prized pieces are the "thread-woven jade burial suit," the "stem cup with high foot," and the "double-ring jade pendant with dragon-phoenix design." The latter, unearthed near the tomb owner's right eye, is a decorative jade piece carved from pale greenish-white jade. It consists of two concentric rings: the inner ring features an openwork dragon in motion, while the outer ring showcases an openwork phoenix. This iconic design was adopted as the emblem of the Nanyue King Museum-The Site of King's Tomb.

The Big Buddha Temple
4.7

The Big Buddha Temple

Guangzhou Dafo Temple was built in the Southern Han Dynasty (917-971 AD), named Xinzang Temple, and was built for the twenty-eight places in the sky by Liu Yan, the king of the Southern Han Dynasty. In the Ming Dynasty, it was expanded to Longzang Temple, and later changed to the Patrol Office. In the first year of Qing Shunzhi (1649), the office was destroyed by fire. In the spring of the second year of Emperor Kangxi, the King of Pingnan, Shang Ke, donated his salaries by himself, imitating the official temple system of the capital, and rebuilding the temple in the local style of Lingnan, which has a high cultural and artistic value. The Daxiong Palace is located north to south, with a construction area of 1,200 square meters. It is still the crown of Lingnan. Although it has been eroded by wind and rain for more than 300 years, its style still exists. The high-quality wood donated by Wang of Annan (now Vietnam) is used as the frame of the beam and column, and it is still basically intact. In the eleventh year of Yongzheng (1733), Liu Shu, the prefect of Guangzhou, chose the Great Buddha Temple as the place to announce the edict, and built a proclamation pavilion in front of the hall. At the same time, the Weituo Hall, the Jialan Hall and the east and west gates of "Buddha Realm" and "Zen Forest" were built on both sides of the main hall. At this time, the scope of the monastery expanded, Buddhist affairs prospered, and its reputation spread far and wide, becoming one of the five major jungles in Guangfu.

Pro Tips

  • Get the metro app or just tap your bank card. The Guangzhou metro covers almost everything and runs until around 11:30 pm.
  • From Baiyun Airport, take metro line 3. It's cheap and fast. Taxis cost triple and get stuck in traffic.
  • Try dim sum in old teahouses, not tourist spots. Go before 10 am or after 2 pm to avoid the long wait.
  • Alipay and WeChat Pay work everywhere. A few small noodle shops still take cash only, but don't count on it.
  • Avoid Canton Tower on weekends unless you like crowds. The view from the top is nice, but the wait is not.
  • Watch your step when crossing streets. Scooters and electric bikes don't always stop. Look left, right, and then left again.
