The Exhibition Hall of Evidence of Crime by Unit 731 of the Japanese Imperial Army

The Museum of Evidence of Crimes Committed by Unit 731 of the Japanese Imperial Army is located in Pingfang District, Harbin. Built on the site of Unit 731, it is a specialized museum displaying extensive evidence of the human experiments conducted by the Japanese invaders. Unit 731, established in 1933, conducted inhumane human experiments on captured Chinese soldiers and numerous innocent civilians during the 12 years leading up to Japan's surrender in 1945. These experiments included frostbite experiments, vivisections, poison gas experiments, and bacteriological experiments. The new museum, completed in 2015 (also known as the "Black Box"), is currently the core indoor exhibition area of the site. Through precious historical artifacts, experimental equipment, video materials, and scene reconstructions, it comprehensively exposes the heinous crimes of Unit 731. The walls along the central corridor list nearly three thousand victims, including Chinese, Soviets, Mongolians, and Koreans. The outdoor ruins area preserves the remains of buildings such as the bacteriological laboratory, the frostbite laboratory, and the crematorium. On the eve of Japan's surrender in 1945, Unit 731, in its retreat, destroyed most of the buildings to cover up its crimes and released rats carrying plague bacteria, leading to a plague outbreak in the Pingfang area in 1946, which killed a large number of residents. Unit 731 was one of the largest bacteriological warfare units in the history of world warfare. Along with Auschwitz, it is considered one of the two major killing hordes in the world, serving as a stark reminder that history must never be forgotten.
